blue moon triptych

March 30th 2024

I had the opportunity to perform at this monthly online event, the Blue Moon Triptych. It is held on the last saturday of each month, and the performers hail from all over the globe. It was a great time, the other performers were inspiring. I am extremely grateful for being given the opportunity.

This was my first time doing a live performance in some number of years. And it was my first solo performance. Add to that the fact that I was using instruments I had only just begun to understand mere months before. I feel that all in all it was a successful performance, and I am emboldened to attempt more perfomances, both online and in real life.

In this piece, I was playing the violin and the tin whistle. It begins with a few gestures on the violin that are recorded onto the Leapyear Device. These are then manipulated via Orca on a Norns using a custom set of operators. Namely my refactoring of the softcut param, which enables control of the onboard delay system. The tin whistle is then introduced, and a continuation of the manipulations, until finally a pizzicato gesture with the violin. This leads into a passage of devolution as the granular nature of the sound is revealed. Until in the final moments the true sounds are reformed and the piece culminates with the repetition of the final violin gesture.
