Light Time Delay- bandcamp

This is a new podcast series that allows artists to team up to perform a live music collaboration. The brain child of Ben and Sam. They propsed this as a way for two artists to come together in a "blind date" (my words) kind of way, and see what happens.

I had the privilege to be paired up with Théa (Light Time Delay, from Seattle Washinton) who is a very talented and ispirational artist that comes from a scientific background. Which was something I was a little intimidated by, but any intimidation I felt initially quickly evaporated as we began to explore what the nature of our collaboration would be.

A collaboration which we had carte blanche to discover. We were poised to be the first performance for the series and no sort of expectation had developed or been imposed on us. Which allowed us to pretty freely explore what we were capable of and enjoyed putting together.

As a significant part of my own artistic practice and sensibility I took this as another opportunity to perform with a suite of instruments that I had been developing. So here we see the Leap Year Device as well as my Norns script _awed. This toolset allowed me to both create sounds as well as to manipulate sounds.

I was hooked on the idea of passing sounds back and forth between myself and Théa. And the manipulations that could manifest from such a workflow. This however became a technical hurdle that we couldn't quite overcome to my fullest satisfaction. In the end we had a side connection that allowed Théa to feed me audio from her setup that I could manipulate through my system and represent through the live feed.

The thing I wanted to avoid in this kind of collaboration was to have a sense of two seperate instrumentalists playing alongside eachother. Instead I wanted to create a network of connections between our systems that made the origin of the sound opaque. Or indecipherable. I think this is one of the nice things about electonics and digital tools in sound generation practices, is the ability to collaborate deeply in the generation of sounds.

While we couldn't fully entangle our sound generation and manipulation abilities the way I can dream of. We certainly were able to intertwine our creative sensibilities and generate an evolving asoundscape that was both fun to develop, perform, and participate in on all accounts.

One of the great benefits of participating in this series has been the ability to see and participate in the development of a new corner of the world that is devoted to creativity and generosity. The artists that have come after us, and the hosts themselves, have been very giving in support and encouragement to keep creating. I can't thank them all enough.

And special thanks for Théa to diving into this unknown with me!
